The Frederick County Sheriff's Office reported that during the course of one week in late December, it had suspended two of its deputies after each was charged with a crime.
Detective 1st Class Todd Joia faced charges stemming from a December 10th theft report involving more than $2,000 that had been taken a video lottery business in a neighboring town. An employee who had been working at the business at the time identified Joia as having been there on the night of the theft. Investigators stated Joia had also made a number of incriminating statements about the incident.
Following an investigation, Joia was officially arraigned on Friday December 20th for felony charges of entering without breaking and jailed with a $100,000 bond. He was suspended from the Sheriff's Office the same day.
The second suspension, involving Deputy 1st Class Kevin White, occurred on December 22nd after White was charged with 2nd-degree assault for allegedly punching a man. White claims he was acting in self-defense at the time.
